Google’s new Chrome OS to slash PC prices

Google has launched a test version of Chrome the OS, the much-anticipated and delayed internet-centric operating system that analysts say can make the personal computer cheaper by up to 25% in India. “Chrome OS is first and foremost a free software. “An operating system makes up for about a fifth, and in many cases, a fourth, a PC’s price.

“Google Chrome is necessary to reduce PC costs as it will be open source, and will not have associated licenses. The cost factor for each other, users of Chrome OS computers also look forward to other benefits.” Microsoft Windows 7 Home Basic version costs Rs 5690 and Windows 7 Ultimate at Rs 11,190 adding PC prices.

PCs depend on the applications delivered via the Internet, making it easy for users to access files and programs from any computer. “The Chrome is deal for a growing number of people who need to access or record information in their daily work, but is rarely at a desk with a PC and an Ethernet connection.” Google first announced the Chrome OS in July 2009 along with plans to sell netbooks running software from the second half of 2010.

India’s top software export service provider Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (TCS) announced Q1 2011 net profit results 15 July, 2010.

TCS reported that quarterly net profit is increased by 21%, beating it’s estimates and also have outsourcing demand from overseas clients.

TCS Group said today on Tuesday that when we see according to US accounting standards, the net profit is increase to 18.4 billion rupees ($395 million).

Reliance Industries is to announce its fourth quarter results of FY10. According to CNBC-TV18’s estimates, the company’s Q4FY10 sales are seen up 115% at Rs 61,047 crore versus Rs 28,362 crore, Year-on-Year, YoY.

Swami Nithyananda has been arrested on 21st April, 2010 at Solan in Himachal Pradesh today. Nithyananda was arrested after a non-bailable arrest warrant was issued against him by a court.

The Swami Nithyananda will be taken to a local court in Solan or Simla for transit remand. and later he will be brought to Karnataka or Tamil Nadu.

A court in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu had issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against the Godman on April 19th.

Attack on IPL : Bangalore blast at Chinnaswamy stadium

Bangalore blast delays IPL 2010 RCB vs MI match by 15 minutes and reduces to 15 over. It is reported that two explosions occurred at M. Chinnaswamy stadium, Bangalore today around 4 PM just before the IPL match was about to start between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians.
It all happens at gate number 12 of the stadium and eight persons are reportedly injured in the explosion. One blast took place at Anil Kumble Circle and the other at the generator room.

England beat India by 3-2, qualify for Hockey World Cup semi-finals

European hockey champions England clinched a semi-final place in the men's World Cup by beating India 3-2 on Saturday, elsewhere, tournament favourites Australia defeated Spain 2-0 to close in on a semi-final spot.

European champions became the first team to reach the last four stage of the hockey World Cup.

Gurwinder Singh Chandi and skipper Rajpal Singh scored in the 54th and 58th minute respectively to cut down the lead to 2-3 for India after the European champions extended their lead over India to 3-0 within 11 minutes after halftime. England led the hosts 1-0 at halftime.

In-form Luke Doerner scored from a penalty corner to put world number two Australia 1-0 up in the 20th minute against Olympic silver medallists Spain.

Glenn Turner was also on target in the 60th as former champions Australia recorded their third victory in four matches in Pool B.

Australia, who won a record 10th Champions Trophy in December, thumped South Africa by a record 12-0 margin in their previous match.

New Delhi: Kerala’s budget for 2010-11 claims to be green, lays emphasis on higher education and the IT sector, and refuses to toe the Centre’s line on increasing VAT rates to compensate for the reduction in CST rates from 4 per cent to 2 per cent that has caused revenue loss to states.

The highlights are :

Tax on beer and wine reduced by 10 percent.
Tax on liquor other types of liquor increased by 10 percent.Stamp duty registration of property sales reduced on notified fair value of land. Surcharge in this regard stands abolished.
The effective rate of stamp duty, surcharge and registration fee is down to 11 per in City Corporation areas, 10 percent in municipal areas and 9 percent in panchayat areas.
Direct to Home services will be taxed under the luxury tax bracket by one percent on gross charges.
Cable television operators with less than 5000 connections will be exempt from luxury tax.
8 percent increase in life time tax on motor cars and omni buses with engine capacity above 1500cc.
Autorickshaws can pay vehicle tax on lump-sum for five years. The rate is Rs. 2000. One-shot settlement will be extended to payment of motor vehicle arrears too.
Luxury tax on hotel rooms reduced by 2.5 percentage points, new rates are no 7.5 percent and 12.5 percent.
VAT on sugar and textiles to remain the same. Imported sugar will be exempt from tax.

Kolkata Police trace the threat calls

Three Kolkata city businessmen have allegedly received extortion calls from the terror outfit, which is now headed by Amir Reza Khan. Khan is believed to hail from Kolkata and was one of the masterminds of the 2002 American Center attack in the city.

State home secretary Ardhendu Sen said, "Yes, three city-based industrialists received some threat calls. Out of three, two complaints have been lodged with police."

According to police sources, a hotelier and two prominent shoe barons received these threat calls.

The calls were traced to Dubai, Karachi and Nepal. The caller is said to have demanded money to pay the legal bills of Aftab Ansari, convicted in the Kolkata American Centre attack of July 5, 2001. Ansari was sentenced to death in the case. The attack has left 5 policemen dead and 14 were seriously injured in the attack.

Massive Tsunami Warning issued after Chile quake

A massive magnitude-8.8 earthquake struck south-central Chile early on Saturday, killing at least 85 people, knocking down buildings, homes and hospitals, and triggering a tsunami.

Local television TV Chile reported that a 15-storey building collapsed in the hardest-hit city of Concepcion, where cracks opened up in the streets.

Telephone and power lines were down, making it difficult to assess the full extent of the damage close to the epicenter.

According to US government reporte, a powerful new 6.1-magnitude aftershock hit just offshore central Chile early in the wake of a major 8.8-strong earthquake.

The epicentre of the 35-kilometre deep tremor, was some 200 kilometres southwest of Valparaiso, a port city in central Chile, according to the US Geological Survey.
The US Geological Survey said the earthquake struck 70 miles (115 km) northeast of Concepcion at a depth of 35 km at 3:34 a.m. (0634 GMT).

The capital Santiago, about 320 km north of the epicenter, was also badly hit. The international airport was closed for at least 24 hours as the quake destroyed passenger walkways and shook glass out of doors and windows.

Chile's main copper producing region and some of the world's largest copper mines are in the far north of the country near its border with Peru, but there are also major copper deposits near Santiago.

Terror strikes Pune; 9 killed

Terror struck Pune Saturday evening when the improvised explosive device, kept in an unattended packet outside the kitchen of the German bakery, Pune, exploded at around 7.30 pm when a waiter attempted to open it.

Eight people had died and 32 were injured in the blast. One each of the killed and the injured are foreigners,

The German bakery is a favourite food joint for foreigners, located close to Osho Ashram which had been surveyed by Pakistani-origin American David Coleman Headley, a Lashkar-e Taiba operative.

This is the first major attack since 26/11 carnage.

“Repair Almost Anything.” Rizvan Khan, the protagonist of the film holds out a placard after he runs out of money during his long, arduous, circuitous journey to meet the President of the United States of America to tell him just one thing: “My Name Is Khan and I am not a terrorist”.

In the post 9/11 world when the west particularly began to judge the whole basket by a few bad apples and put a whole community under the scanner because of their religious orientation, Rizvan Khan, the man who suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome, the man who can’t stand loud noises and stark colours, the man who’s scared of venturing into places he isn’t used to and can barely cross a road without the risk of being hit by a speeding vehicle, trudges through the length and breadth of the US and braves racial discrimination, arrest, and even torture at the hands of the authority only because he’s driven by deep love for his estranged wife Mandira (Kajol) from whom he parted with the promise that he won’t return till he’s metthe President . It’s the tale of the triumph of this indomitable spirit of the protagonist of My Name Is Khan, incredibly played by the ever-surprising Shahrukh Khan, that touches you, moves you, makes you cry, gives you goose pimples, and enlightens you with its message.

Karan Johar is known for his tearjerkers and he sticks to his format this time, too. But he also addresses an important issue, one that is tearing the world apart.

His handling of scenes is very mature and real. The interaction between young Rizvan with his mother (Zarina Wahab) and his younger brother Zakir is poignant. Zarina's obsessive focus on Rizwan drives Zakir to the wall. The crack is easy to see; his hatred for his brother easy to accept. Rizvan, in one touching moment tells his brother that at least he is able to express his sadness through tears... as for him, it's a frustrating process all bottled within.

Karan and SRK have done what they had to for the viewers and peace at large; but in the real world, can love actually be given a chance? A beautiful movie with a beautiful message not to forget powerful performances from the jodi that stormed the screens13 years ago with DDLJ.

Jimmy Sheirgill is once again proving to be a powerhouse performer. Soniya Jehan and Tannay Cheddha as the young Rizvan are fabulous. Zarina Wahab captivates with her emotions for both her sons. Yuvaan Makaar as Kajol's son is a confident actor.

Music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy and cinematography by Ravi Chandran is top-notch.

Apple Inc. has unveiled the iPad, a tablet-style computer that resembles the iPhone, but larger.

It's so much more intimate than a laptop and so much more capable than a smart phone.

Apple had kept its "latest creation" tightly under wraps, though many analysts had correctly speculated that it would be a one-piece tablet computer with a big touch screen, larger than an iPhone but smaller than a laptop.

The iPad has a 9.7-inch touch screen. It is a half-inch thick, weighs 1.5 pounds and comes with 16, 32 or 64 gigabytes of flash memory storage. The device comes with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless technology, but no mention was immediately made of a data connection through a wireless carrier.Battery lasts for 10 hours, and that the device can sit for a month on standby without needing a charge.

Tech Mahindra Highest Bidder for Satyam

Indian software company Tech Mahindra Ltd. is the highest bidder for a stake in rival Satyam Computer Services Ltd., two people familiar with the development said Monday.

"They (Tech Mahindra) have emerged as the clear winner. They had bid at 58 rupees ($1.16) per share," one of them told Dow Jones Newswires. The next bidder was Larsen & Toubro Ltd. at 49.50 rupees, the person added.

According to the process laid down earlier, the bid is for a 31% stake in Satyam. This will be followed by an open offer for another 20% in the company.

At 58 rupees per share, Tech Mahindra would have to pay about 32 billion rupees to 33 billion rupees for a controlling 51% stake in Satyam, said Apurva Shah, an IT analyst with Mumbai-based brokerage Prabhudas Lilladher.

Billionaire investor Wilbur Ross had bid at 20 rupees per share, while U.S.-based Cognizant Technology Solutions Co. had withdrawn from the process, the person said.

Hyderabad-based Satyam, once India's fourth-largest software exporter by revenue, is looking for a buyer who will infuse funds and help revive the company.

The company has been in turmoil after its founder, B. Ramalinga Raju, revealed in January he overstated its profits over several years and created a fictitious cash balance of more than $1 billion.

But with new 'taut' entrants, we thought it was time to do a repoll on the hottest butts in Bollywood and surprise, surprise - John Abraham and Malaika Arora-Khan still managed to beat the other contenders.

John's yellow trunk act in Dostana apparently still has women drooling. Out of 1,000 women polled, 55% thought John's tushy was the best. Ranbir Kapoor came a distant second with only 17%. Hrithik Roshan, often referred to as a Greek God, got 13%, Saif Ali Khan got 7% and Akshay Kumar got 6%. Salman Khan got the least votes with just 2% voting for him. Rcom launches India's fastest broadband internet service

Telecom major Reliance Communications on Thursday launched what the company said would be the fastest internet service in the country to date.

The company said the new service called Reliance Netconnect Broadband Plus offers huge potential and would help increase the broadband penetration in the country manifold.

Speaking to reporters, Mahesh Prasad, President, Reliance Communications said the new service will be available in 35 cities which covers 80 to 85 per cent potential of broadband users in the country.

The subscribers, to avail of the service, will need to buy a device costing Rs 3500 and select a tariff plan which varies from monthly charges of Rs 299 going upto Rs 1750. The service will be available from the next week.

Prasad said the company's existing service Netconnect has a subscriber base of 10 lakh and they could consider upgrade their subscription to the new service.

Prasad said the company has upgraded the software in its network for launching the new service which can offer downlink speed of upto 3.1 Mbps and a separate uplink speed of upto 1.8 Mbps offering 30 per cent higher downlink rate in comparison to any other wireless broad band offering.

The new service is best suited for video streaming, video surveillance, rich media content and superior internet browsing, a company press note said.

Lok Sabha polls from April 16 to May 13

The much-awaited schedule for the Lok Sabha elections was announced on Monday afternoon, by Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami.

The country will go to polls from April 16 to May 13. Counting of votes will be done on May 16 and the 15th Lok Sabha will be constituted by June two.

Polls will be conducted in 124 constituencies on April 16, 141 constituencies on April 23, 107 constituencies on April 30, 85 constituencies on May 7 and 86 constrituencies on May 13.

Five-phased polls will be held in Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh, Bihar will have four-phased elections, Maharashtra and West Bengal will witness three-phased polls, while Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Punjab will have elections in two phases, N Gopalaswami announced at a press conference.

Remaining 15 states and seven union territories will have one-day polling.

Treating Manipur as an exception, polls will be conducted in the state on April 22, considering April 23 is a local holiday there.

Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim and Orissa will simultaneously hold assembly polls.

On Sunday, the President rejected the controversial recommendation by the Chief Election Commissioner for the removal of Election Commissioner Navin Chawla. The President’s decision will now pave the way for Chawla’s elevation as CEC after Gopalaswami demits office on April 20.

The Election Commission headed by Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami decided the dates of the general elections after completing consultation process with political leaders, home secretary and secretaries of key ministries.

Earlier in the day, the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) led by Ajit Singh announced its entry into the opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The RLD will have a poll pact with the main NDA constituent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In a late development on Sunday, the Trinamool Congress formed an alliance with Congress in West Bengal to fight the Lok Sabha elections against the Left Front. (Times of India)

Nandita Das's Firaaq honoured in Pak. Two Indian films, - Nandita Das' directorial debut Firaaq and a documentary Superman of Malegaon - have won the Ciepie awards at the 7th Kara Film Festival.

After receiving the award, Nandita said she was glad at the response her film had received and the citation that the jury gave, according to reports.

The Best Feature Film award was picked up by Nandita Das' Firaaq that was screened twice during the 12-day festival. Pakistani telefilm Burns Road Ki Niilofer picked up two awards for best screenplay and best female supporting actress.

The Ciepie was awarded to six films, two documentaries - Superman of Malegaon (India), and Kesan Lapsi (Finland) - two short films with one for Best Animated Film awarded to Even Pigeons Go to Heaven (France). The best Short Action Film award went to Match Factor.

Faiza Ahmed Khan is the director of Superman of Malegaon, a spoof on superman films.
Rasheed Naz, who played an important role in Pakistani film Khuda Kay Liye, bagged best actor in a supporting role award, while the special jury award went to Rashid Farooqui for Ramchand Pakistani.

Indian filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, in his short address at the fest, said that festivals like these help in bridging the gap between the two neighbours. He said he was at a shop in Karachi when a guy approached him to ask for help with his neurologically disabled brother.

"The guy asked for help in contacting a neurosurgeon in Mumbai, and I immediately punched in the number and let them set up a possible meeting. This was exactly how film festivals help bring the people of different countries together," said Bhatt.

Speaking about his meeting with noted ghazal singer Mehdi Hasan, Bhatt said that neither he nor Hasan would forget the bonds formed during their meeting.

Murthy has been with Satyam since Jan 94. It has appointed Homi Khusrokhan and Partho Datta as special advisors to the Board. The board of fraud-hit Satyam Computer Services on Thursday appointed A S Murthy as new CEO of the IT firm. Murthy was Satyam’s global business head and has been working for the IT company for the last 15 years.

Partho S Dutta and Homi Khusrokhan were appointed Special Advisors.

A S Murthy, will be the chief executive of the company with immediate effect, Satyam said in a statement after a two-day board meeting in Hyderabad.

Satyam has also received bank sanctions for 6 billion rupees towards working capital requirements.

Earlier in the day, agencies reported that the Andhra Pradesh police are likely to make more arrests in the Rs 7,800 crore fraud involving the IT major.

CID officials investigating the case have not ruled out more arrests in about a fortnight.

“We are constantly scrutinising the seized documents and trying to retrieve data from the hard-disks and laptops recovered during the raids of residences and offices of Satyam officials including its former chairman B Ramalinga Raju,” a senior CID official probing the Satyam fraud said on Thursday.

Infosys results for Fourth Quarter and Year ended

The benchmark index is flat in the early trade despite a better-than-expected third quarter result from IT bellwether Infosys. Most of the Asian markets are weak fell after Wall Street fell for the fourth session on Monday because of worries related to financial sector grew.

The Senex is up 57 points at 9,167 while Nifty is up 8 points at 2,781. Before the markets opened in India, Infosys reported its third quarter results. Software major Infosys Technologies announced a 33.31 per cent growth in consolidated net profit at Rs 1,641 crore for the third quarter ended December 31, over the corresponding period a year ago.

The Infosys stock is up over 4 per cent on better-than-expected numbers. Other Sensex stocks that are among the major gainers are Rel Infra and RCom, both up over 3 per cent.

Among the losers, Wipro and Tata Steel are down nearly 3 per cent. Among the sectoral indices on the BSE, the IT index is leading the gainers, up over 2 per cent, followed by the realty index.
Most of the major Asian markets are trading in the red on Tuesday after Dow fell 1.5 per cent on Monday.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell for the fourth session Monday as oil prices tumbled and as worries about the financial sector grew. So far this year, the Dow is down 3.5 per cent.

Soha Ali Khan is a busy girl in New year

Soha Ali Khan hasn’t touched down in Delhi for a while, but what surprised us the most when we ran into her, was the fact that the svelte actress was sporting sunglasses even though it was quite a foggy morning!

When we asked her why she was making the unusual style statement, she laughed, “It’s after a long gap that I’m back home and it’s nice to be back in Delhi with my friends and family. I was away for almost a month and a half in South Africa for the shooting of my next movie. Unfortunately on the last day of the shoot, I had an allergic reaction to a flower we had used during the shoot and my eyes got affected.

Thank God it happened just as the unit was packing up. Brilliant timing, na? I have to wear sunglasses now to protect my eyes. I’m also on antibiotics and lots of medicine.”
Soha is quite excited about her upcoming movies. She’s just finished with Dil Kabaddi and tells us about her other projects as well, saying, “I have many movies releasing this year. My next movie is a comedy and I really enjoy doing comic roles. It’s a nice change from my usual fare. I have just completed three movies – Dhoondte Reh Jaooge, 99 and Tera Kya Hoga Johnny – which are all coming out this year. I was in South Africa shooting for Kunal Deshmukh’s movie Tum Milein, with Emraan Hashmi. It was a great experience for me to work in this movie, as the role is quite different from anything that I have done before. We shot five weeks in South Africa and we will start again in January in Mumbai. I’m quite happy with the way the movie has turned out as it has a very interesting script.”

We asked her if she’s actively looking for a change of pace as far as the characters she plays on the silver screen are concerned, and she agrees, “I enjoy experimenting with new roles and it’s also helping me to grow as an actress. The idea is always to do new kinds of roles. It’s so easy to get into a creative rut. I’m also doing a Bengali movie with Aparna Sen, Goinar Baksho (Jewellery box). This movie will be quite interesting as it centres around three women – Konkona Sen, Moushumi Chatterjee and me. My mom is not a part of the movie, but she is part of it in spirit. She is always there by my side to support and encourage me. In this particular case she’s going to coach me in speaking in Bengali as I’m terrible at it!.”

On a lighter note, we ask her opinion of the much discussed Saif-Kareena link-up and she shrugs, “Seriously, I'm bored of talking about Saif and Kareena. I just don't understand why people walk up to me and ask about their relationship. I think it would be more appropriate to ask them directly. But yes, Kareena is a lovely person and I’m happy that she has made my brother happy.”
Soha has also grabbed the chance to spend some time with her family now that she’s back home. She tells us “I had been away for five weeks in South Africa, so now that I'm back home I would like to spend some quality time with my family. I will try to reconnect with my friends and family members this year.

One gets so busy sometimes that one forgets what is truly important. I was very distressed after hearing about the Mumbai terror attacks. I was in South Africa and it was horrible to see images of the Taj and Oberoi hotels. Luckily, no one close to me was affected directly by the tragedy. But I was watching the news constantly and the condition of the victims left me totally shaken. The New Year was also a very low key affair for me because of this”

And does she have any other projects apart from the movies she’s working on? Soha laughs “At the moment acting takes up all my time and energy. It’s very difficult to multi-task, so I find it very difficult to do anything else. I also love writing and enjoy sports like badminton and tennis.” Quite multifaceted isn’t she. Source : TOI

Nana Patekar is all set to woo movie buffs with another comedy, Horn Ok Pleassss, after wining accolades for his hilarious performance as underworld don Uday Shetty in the 2007 hit Welcome.

Directed by first-time filmmaker Rakesh Narang, the comedy drama features Rimi Sen and model-turned-actor Muzammil Ibrahim alongside Nana and releases Jan 9.

Other actors in the film include Ali Asgar, Nirmiti Sawant, Mukesh Tiwari, Vrajesh Hirjee, Raakhi Sawant, Kunika and Satish Shah.

The two-hour laugh riot is about a down-to-earth truck owner Govinda (Nana) who is a great believer in love and is madly in love with his wife (Rimi).

Being a firm supporter of love, he saves the life of a heartbroken suicidal photographer Ajay (Muzammil). On learning that the boy loves a married woman, he advises him to kill the husband and chalks out a murder plan himself for his new friend.

Little does he know that he is planning to kill himself as Ajay is in love with Govinda's wife? What follows is complete madness.

Muzammil, whose first film Dhokha proved to be a box office dud, is quite excited about working with a seasoned actor like Nana.

"I believe an actor needs to grow quickly. The sooner you prove yourself in a tough genre, the better. I started with a very complex role. Nandita Das and Deepa Mehta at Dubai International Film Festival

Nandita Das' directorial debut Firaaq and Deepa Mehta's Heaven on Earth have been awarded at the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF).

The awards to the two films were announced in the Asia-Africa Competitions category, coinciding with the close of the DIFF.

Sreekar Prasad won the Best Editor award for Firaaq directed by Nandita Das while the Best Screenplay award went to Deepa Mehta for Heaven On Earth. "This year our jury members were hard at work trying to evaluate the merits of truly excellent films. We are extremely proud of the films that we have screened, and choosing between them was very difficult," DIFF's Artistic Director, Masoud Amralla al Ali, said.

"However, we are pleased with the results, and hope to see these filmmakers back at DIFF in following years with new projects."

A total of 47,500 movie-goers streamed into DIFF's screenings as of Wednesday, representing a significant increase in festival attendance over 2007.

"We are thrilled by high participation from the public and industry members alike, which means that there is a strong enthusiasm in Dubai for our mandate to showcase quality cinema," DIFF's Managing Director, Shivani Pandya said.

"We are looking forward already to the 2009 festival, and another five years with our warm, supportive and informed Dubai audiences."

The awards announced on Thursday were aimed at recognising the best films in the festival. They were expanded this year to include a new AsiaAfrica segment, which embraces films from emerging markets. Some of the entries were submitted from Afghanistan, Turkey, Cameroon and Kazakhstan.

Thousands of Muslims today offered prayers at the Palayam Juma Masjid, and other mosques on the occasion of Bakrid, a festival signifying sacrifice and dedication, to mark the conclusion of the Haj at Mecca.

The festival commemorating Prophet Ibrahim’s act of sacrifice was celebrated in Kerala with traditional piety and pomp. Muslims all over the state offered special prayers at Idgahs and Mosques. There was a large turnout of the faithfuls, clad in new apparels, at the Idgahs. Special Idgahs were also set up in different places. After the namaz, they exchanged greetings and visited families. Results of five states that went to election over the past few weeks have surprised many observers. Congress has won Delhi and Mizoram decisively and inching towards the half-way mark in Rajasthan. BJP on the other hand has managed to retain Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
Delhi : Bucking anti-incumbency factor in Indian elections once is quite an achievement and doing it twice is extraodinary. Sheila Dixit has been able to do just that. Her opponent, Vijay Malhotra, currently a BJP MP from South Delhi parliamentary seat was not able to enthuse the base or adapt to the changing demographics in Delhi. Delhi that went to polls just three days after Mumbai attacks seemed to suggest that even in assembly elections local factors play a bigger role. It also seemed to rebut BJP’s allegation that Congress is soft on terrorism.
Rajasthan : After the Meena Gujjar agitation earlier this year, it was very difficult for Vasundhara Raje to dig herself out of the hole and win the elections. Her performance, though credible will leave BJP with a big headache where it has to defend 21 out of 25 Lok Sabha seats in the upcoming general elections. Ashok Gehlot, has led his party to victory again and he will be able to cobble up a coalition with independents to form a government.
Madhya Pradesh : The central Indian state has had three chief ministers in five years. It was Uma Bharati who won a decisive victory against the Congress in 2003 but resigned from the post due to her role in the Hubli-Idgah controversy. Her place was taken by Babulal Gaur who was then replaced by a much younger Shivraj Chauhan. It is to his credit that he had been able to win the state again despite Uma Bharati contesting elections as a separate entity and a much powerful Bahujan Samaj Party.
Chhattisgarh : Raman Singh has managed to win a narrow victory in a very close fight in this small state. Ajit Jogi, who was caught on tape after last assembly elections bargaining with opposition MLAs, led the challenge this time too and lost.

A series of explosions firing has been started again.

According to a foreign news agency, the commandos stepped down at the Nariman House may be Jewish.

Indiann media said that a large number of extremists are present in the Nariman House with huge quantity of arms and weapons.

Media is terming this operation the final against the militants.

Aishwarya Rai pays surprise visit to father

Krishnaraj got the surprise of his life when Aishwarya showed up for a very special family reunion on his birthday on Thursday. Son-in-law Abhishek Bachchan was also expected to attend the occasion, but couldn't do so.

"It's exactly what he (Krishnaraj) wanted. To be with his closest ones. There was no party because he couldn't take it. Only the immediate family and, of course, his daughter's in-laws - Jaya and Amitabh Bachchan - who were expected to drop in to wish him," a close family friend said.

Abhishek and Aishwarya are in the jungles of Kochi shooting for Mani Ratnam's tentatively titled Ravana.

Abhishek said: "I'd have loved to be there because Aishwarya's parents are not just my in-laws. They're a second set of parents that god has blessed me with. Unfortunately, much as I tried I couldn't get away from here even for a few hours."

It's a known fact that Ratnam likes to shoot in complete isolation and at a stretch without any interruption. But when the maverick moviemaker came to know that it was Aishwarya's father's 70th birthday, he quickly gave his leading lady the consent to zip back to Mumbai to be with her ailing dad on this special day.

"Although Aishwarya has been her thoroughly professional self throughout the time when her father has been undergoing treatment for a serious sickness, her heart has been in Mumbai with her father. When Mani heard it was her father's birthday, he let her go without a second thought," said a source.

Some time ago Kareena Kapoor had confessed to After Hours that she’s been left with absolutely no time for her personal life, and now it’s Katrina Kaif’s turn to signal a time out. “I have been working really hard. You know how it is, when your film is just about to release (Yuvvraj). Apart from shooting you also get busy with the publicity bit,” she says, ruing the fact that sleeping for a decent eight hour has become an elusive luxury. “I really need a good night’s rest,” sighed Katrina talking to us late in the night. “But no regrets really. Right now, work is fabulous. I think as a young girl, it’s alright to work as hard as possible. What time I get for myself is more than enough. This kind of work comes to you perhaps once in your life and it is best to take advantage of it,” she says sagely.

But that said, Katrina also admits that the recent hits she has delivered have also burdened her with so many expectations. “I can feel the pressure sometimes. But I tell myself that I cannot let these things affect me. I just need to be really happy because God has been exceptionally kind to me and I have had such wonderful people to work with.” However, she knows that the films releasing in 2009 will present a totally different side to her. “I have been more or less doing the same kind of roles till now. But next year I will be seen in films by Rajkumar Santoshi and Prakash Jha besides a Yashraj film (working title New York).“Jha’s film has a very realistic role for me and it will be a refreshing change from what I have already done. I don’t want to stagnate, but at the same time I know that my commercial roles have worked for me. My glam roles have gone down very well with people and I will continue doing them. Shilpa's wrist injured, doctors advise three-month rest

Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty has injured her wrist and she doesn't know when it happened. Doctors have advised her to take a three-month rest.

"Either it happened because I was practising cartwheels for my new action film or it could be because of the wear and tear that happens in weight training," Shilpa said.

Despite the injury, the actress will continue shooting for the second season of reality show "Bigg Boss" and the movie "The Man".

"I'll wear a long sleeve top for 'Bigg Boss' and I'll wear a thick kada (bangle) for 'The Man'," she said.

While resting at home, Shilpa is reading scripts. "I have started reading scripts that I did not have time to read earlier. But I am going to be very careful about what I say yes to. I want to do films where my character is exceptionally well developed. I don't want to do multi-starrers," she said.

Shilpa has turned producer and her first production venture will be a high-budget action comedy. She says she doesn't want to take any risks for the project.

“That's the reason why I haven't opted for top stars because getting their dates would be a problem. Besides, financers want filmmakers to cut down on costs. How can that be possible? I don't want to compromise on the quality of my film to save a few bucks,” she said. IANS.

Lara Dutta writes a script for herself

Not happy with uninspiring roles being offered by filmmakers these days, actress Lara Dutta has now written a script for herself!

"What prompted me to write a script for myself? Scriptwriters in Bollywood aren't writing anything in depth for a woman. Invariably the scripts glorify the hero while the heroine is the love interest. And the women-oriented films are half-baked attempts at feminist statements. Both to me are uninspiring," Lara said.

So will she take to direction as well?

"No I'm not ready to direct yet. And I can't wait to start my film. I've done two drafts. And I think it needs one more draft, then I'm ready," she said.

But, interestingly, Lara hasn't written a woman-oriented film.

"It has equal space for the male and female protagonists. It's not one of those feminist, in-your-face women's films. The male lead will have a lot to contribute to my film."

And, yes, Lara will produce the film. "We start soon. It will be a very commercial film. And I can't wait."

The former Miss Universe refused to reveal if Dino Morea, with whom she is linked, will play the lead in her film.

Asked when she found the time to write, Lara said, "I've always been a writer. I didn't have time to write earlier. Now what I do is in-between shots, instead of chatting or sleeping, I write my script. Now I can't write unless I've noise all around me."

Lara's mom has been critically unwell for some time now.

"My mom has been unwell for two years. So we're mentally prepared for the inevitable. My mom went into the hospital when I was in Pollachi for Billo Barber. (But) I had to keep focussed on my work. That's what being an actor is all about," she said.

Lara is at her busiest now.

"It feels good to have people like Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar showing so much faith in me. My only professional regret is that I missed out on Salman Khan's Mr & Mrs Khanna. But I can't do everything that's offered to me. David also offered me Hook Ya Crook. That didn't excite me. But I'm doing David's Do Knot Disturb with Govinda. We earlier worked together in Partner and I've just completed Ravi Chopra's Banda Yeh Bindas Hai with him. We had a ball and I've sharpened my comic aptitude working with Govinda."

It is a very urban story of today’s time when a girl and boy can be friends. It is shot in Miami and is a great looking fun film.”

Priyanka is very supportive of gays. She said, “When we are walking on the road, we do not point someone and say that he is a heterosexual. So why should we point at someone and say that he is gay? Sexual preference is an individual choice. Living in a democratic country one should be allowed to have a personal choice.”

She continues, “I am very proud of the fashion industry for giving gay people an opportunity to be themselves and yet be creative. There are many industries which are biased towards gays. This is not called for.”

So has Priyanka encountered a gay in real life? “Oh yes! I have had a gay best friend when I was in school in America and they are so much more fun to talk to about guys related problems because they think like a guy and feel like a women which is fab,” said Piggy Chops while signing off.

Five killed in explosion in Meerut

The town of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh was shaken by a powerful explosion at around 4 o'clock on Saturday afternoon. As per police, it was an accident.

The blast took place in the Zakir Nagar area of Meerut and initial reports said that it claimed five lives and injured seven.

She had some great things to say about the film, and some kind things to say about me!" divulges the actor.

On further probing, PC reluctantly revealed, "She thought I was convincing, and also stated that I could play innocent, bitchy, and vulnerable with ease. Goldie claimed to have loved Fashion even though she didn't understand the language. Her comments did much to me, because I was waiting outside the theatre, a bundle of nerves then, not quite knowing what the reaction of the people was going to be."

So is Hollywood calling; any possibility of being cast in Hawn's production or something? "Hollywood has never been an ambition," confesses Priyanka. "I'm happy doing films. Period. Be it Hindi, English, Kannada, Bengali, Tamil... I'm open to doing any, given that the script is good and I'm convinced of it! Goldie and I didn't discuss movies or opportunities at all. She was our guest at the screening, and that was it."

In their study, Professor Andrew Elliot and Dr Daniela Niesta of the University of Rochester, New York, have said that men find women in red more sexually attractive, confirming it really is the colour of romance.

The researchers also speculated that the attraction towards red could be an evolutionary trait too. Noting the genetic similarity of humans to higher primates, Elliot said scientists have shown that certain male primates are especially attracted to females of their species displaying red. "It could be this very deep, biologically based automatic tendency to respond to red as an attraction cue given our evolutionary heritage," ABC Online quoted Elliot as saying.

In the study, men were shown pictures of women and asked to rate how pretty they were, how much they would like to kiss them and how much the men would like to have sex with them. They were then shown a woman, with some of the pictures bordered in red and some bordered in white, grey or green. The men rated a woman as more attractive if she was framed in red, than when bordered by another colour.

They pointed out that the colour red only altered men's attractiveness and not likability, intelligence or kindness —only attractiveness.

Any woman can get a husband at an hourly rate in Buenos Aires, thanks to a company offering to do the repairs and installations that every home needs, and all "without problems in the bedroom".

'Husband for Rent' is a successful Argentine company that will undertake domestic chores for women who don't have a "handyman" around the house for 50 pesos ($15.50) an hour, the Spanish news agency EFE reported.

"Tired of your husband leaving you with all the household upkeep? And are you tired of your wife nagging at you to do 1,001 repairs? Stop arguing right now," the company says on its Web site.

The firm provides its long list of clients, mostly single or divorced women or widows, with a whole catalogue of electrical and electronic repairs, carpentry and plumbing jobs - although the company's name has caused more than one misunderstanding among potential clients.

"Some don't get it and have made me insinuations, but I just do my job. Once a woman called at 3 o'clock in the morning to say she needed a man," the company's owner, Daniel Alonso, told Efe.

According to the businessman, one of the craziest moments he has had with his company was when a male prostitute sent him an e-mail saying that if he couldn't cope with all his female clients, "he could help him with the jobs".

"And once a woman left a message on the answering service saying that "my name is Cristina, I am 56 and need a complete servicing", Alonso said.

The entrepreneur said that these and similar stories have given Husband for Rent a blacklist of people who are not answered when they call.

The odd anecdotes have been accumulating since 12 years ago, when Daniel, an electronics technician, started the company with his wife, a key figure in its foundation.

"It all began when an elderly neighbour asked my wife if she could borrow her husband. It occurred several times until my wife answered: 'I'll rent him to you.' And so the name of the company was born," said Alonso, who claims to have 2,000 clients.

"The name is important, but the service is also very good because I do repairs in all sectors. Working in several companies gave me the experience and know-how to do all kinds of repairs," he said.

Alonso recommends that his clients call him when they have a number of jobs to do, "because the first hour is charged complete but starting with the second hour we start charging by fractions of an hour."

In his opinion, the possibility of doing several different repairs for a client is one of the secrets of his success, since it turns out to be a good deal for both sides.

"It gives me more hours of work and for the client it's cheaper than calling an electrician, a plumber and a carpenter individually," he said.

So the technician can begin repairing a lamp, then go on to plane some doors, install a telephone system and even fix up a piece of furniture that was about to be thrown out.

Sister Alphonsa becomes first Indian woman to be canonised

Sister Alphonsa, a Catholic nun from Kerala, was on Sunday elevated as Saint by Pope Benedict XVI at a solemn function at the Vatican, making her the first Indian woman to be canonised.

Church bells peeled across Kerala and special prayers were held as the proclamation was made at the St Peters Square in the Vatican.

Three others-- an Italian priest and founder of Missionaries of Sacred Hearts of Jesus, Father Geatano Eerrico, Swiss foundress of the Congregation of Franciscan Sisters of Mary Help of Christians, Maria Bernarda Butler and Narcisa de Jesus Martillo, an Equadorian lay person, were also canonised as Saints along with the Keralite nun.

The Prefect of Congregation of Saints presented Sister Alphonsa's biography to the Pope.

Sister Alphonsa is the second person from India to be canonised by the Catholic church, the first being Gonzalo Garcia, a Franciscan monk born to an Indian mother and Portugese father. While she was alive, people from the sleepy farming village and hamlets around used to call on her and she would pray for them. Some of the miracles attributed to her were said to have happened then.

While the Roman Catholic church has over 10,000 canonised saints, in India this is the first time that someone from its flock has been elevated to full sainthood, church sources say.

The church is spread over Syro Malabar, Malankara and Latin Catholic rites and accounts for about 70 per cent of the Christian population in India.

Giant screens had been put up at Kudamaloor and Bharananganam, the ancestral house and tomb respectively of Sister Alphonsa, to enable the thousands of worshippers who had gathered to see the live telecast.

Union minister Oscar Fernandes led the Indian delegation at the ceremony. Kerala was represented by state PWD minister, Mons Joseph, former minister K M Mani and MP P C Thomas, among others.

Mother General of Franciscan Clarist Congregation, mother Celia, presented the relics of Saint Alphonsa to the Pope.

Former Kerala minister K M Mani and Father Francis Vadakkal, Vice Postulator of the cause of Sister Alphonsa, who led the process of canonisation in India, followed the relics with lighted candles.

Thousands of Indian Christians had gathered at the Vatican to view the ceremony.

"This is a proud moment for the Catholic church", Church spokesperson Father Paul Thelekat said.

The elevation of Sister Alphonsa into sainthood is of special significance to Indian Christians as Alphonsa is a totally 'home grown'person-- born and brought up in the 2000 year-old Syrian Christian traditions of Kerala, considered as the cradle of Indian Christianity with St Thomas apostle preaching the faith by landing at erstwhile Crangannore (Kodungallur), in AD 52.

The process of Alphonsa's canonisation began in 1953 with the church setting up a Diocesan tribunal. After examining the records of her life and works and testifying the witnesses, she was raised to the status of Blessed through the beautification process by late Pope John Paul II when he visited India in 1985.

Pope Benedict made an official announcement of her elevation to sainthood early this year after giving the final stamp of approval to a miracle attributed to her.

Estranged couple splits home in half, literally : Study

A Cambodian couple who separated after 40 years of marriage may have taken things too literally when it came to splitting their assets : The husband cut the house in two.

"It is the strangest thing I've ever seen," said May Titthara, who wrote about the case for The Phnom Penh Post, an English-language newspaper in the Cambodian capital. "People there never saw this happen in a divorce. It is very interesting for them."

The husband and wife had been living together in the house in a village in the Prey Veng province of southern Cambodia, roughly 80 km from the capital.

The couple would not talk to the newspaper, but the village chief told May Titthara that the husband was angry because his wife wouldn't tend to him when he was ill.

Last week, the husband and his friends moved his belongings to one side of the house — and sawed and chiseled it off, said the reporter, who interviewed the village chief and neighbors.

The couple also divided their property into four sections: for themselves and their two children.

Because the couple side-stepped the provincial courts when they parted ways, their unusual resolution could pose a problem later, said Prak Phin, a lawyer for Legal Support for Child and Women in the province.

"This was a not a legal divorce. It never went to the court," he said. "If they have disagreements in the future, they will not have a legal (recourse)."

The man moved his part of the house to his parents' property, May Titthara said. He lives with his parents, while the wife continues to reside in her precariously perched, upright half.

Indian Bank Strike Wednesday

A strike called for Wednesday by some Indian banking unions protesting consolidation of state-run banks may partly affect banking operations, although the Bombay Stock Exchange said settlements were unlikely to be impacted.

Three unions representing about 600,000 workers will stage demonstrations and rallies late on Tuesday and Wednesday, a union leader said. Not all bank unions are involved in the strike.

"We are not convinced about the need for any consolidation in the sector," C.H. Venkatachalam, convener of United Forum of Bank Unions, said. "All unions will meet on Aug. 21 to decide the further course of action."

The unions represent workers at state-run banks and foreign banks, but officials at newer private banks such as ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank said they would be unaffected as they had no unions.

The Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange had delayed settlements during a strike in January when about 900,000 bank employees stopped work.

But a Bombay Stock Exchange spokesman said settlements were unlikely to be affected this time and trading would continue as usual.

Debt, currency and swap market trading are unlikely to be affected much by the strike but cash rates may tighten as state-run banks are the biggest lenders in the money markets, the head of trading at a foreign bank said.

Venkatachalam said the unions opposed the government's decision to allow State Bank of India, the country's largest bank, to absorb its associate State Bank of Saurashtra.

However State Bank of India Chairman O.P Bhatt earlier in day said there was no employee backlash due to the merger.

State-run Bank of Baroda and Indian Bank said they saw limited impact as not all unions were part of the strike.

Delhi Blast - 25 killed, 90 injured in 5 blasts

Twenty five people have so far been reported killed and 90 injured in 5 serial bomb blasts in crowded places across Delhi.

The blasts took place in Karol Bagh, Connaught Place, Greater Kailash-I and Barakhamba Road in a span of 20 minutes. Four more bombs found at India Gate, Regal cinema & Central Park were defused.

Terror outfit Indian Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for the blasts.

The first explosion rocked Gaffar market area of Karol Bagh in central Delhi at 6.15pm. The explosive was kept near a car. The impact of the blast was so severe that an auto was thrown up several feet.

This was followed by the blasts in Connaught Place area.

In Barakhamba Road, one of the bombs was suspected to be hidden near Nirmal tower. The second blast in the CP took place near Gopal Das tower. Both the buildings house private offices and banks. The third blast took place in Central Park.

In the GK-I blast, ten shops were damaged in the explosion that took place at around 6:40 pm. The bombs were hidden in a dustbin.

Preliminary examination of the blast site said that low intensity ammonium nitrate tied to integrated circuit had been used in almost all the serial blasts. Timer devices were used in all the blasts.

Two persons have been detained by the police for questioning. The police says that a 12-year-old boy may be able to provide clues.

Prime Mininister Manmohan Singh has condemned the blasts and appealed for calm.

The Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil has said that people should maintain calm and social harmony and understanding. Source

Google is launching its own free, open source web browser. Google Chrome, as the browser is called, will only be available for Windows operating systems for a while, but the team is working on developing the product for Mac and Linux users as well.

Since Google is undoubtedly ruling the search market, many wonder as to why the company felt the need to sail close to the wind, as all the pieces seem to be well set on the board – Microsoft's Internet Explorer is leading the market, with Mozilla's Firefox distantly following. Google believes that one more good application can never be too much and, in this sense, Chrome promises to be a breakthrough.

“We realized that the web had evolved from mainly simple text pages to rich, interactive applications and that we needed to completely rethink the browser. What we really needed was not just a browser, but also a modern platform for web pages and applications, and that's what we set out to build.” VP Product Management Sundar Pichai and Engineering Director Linus Upson wrote on Google's official blog, announcing the launch.

What singles out the new browser is, primarily, the fact that tabs are given a greater importance than windows. Hence, tabs will be set at the top of the page, above the address bar. To each tab a separate process will be assigned, which means that, whenever one jams or is unresponsive, the others will continue to work. Thanks to a JavaScript engine, V8, pages will load really fast compared with similar products, the company claims.

As a plus, users will have the possibility to track all the processes employed by the browser, and to detect which webpages eat up more resources. Also, the Google browser will have a function resemblant to “Suggest,” used by the search engine to offer hints on most popular pages whenever users start writing something in the search box. Here too, users will have the possibility to shortcut their way to webpages that have been previously opened with the browser, or to get suggestions about the most visited websites corresponding to the first letters typed in the address bar.

Google, bearing in mind the criticism regarding users' privacy that the company faced many times, will allow them to make use of the browser in an “incognito” mode, which will prevent the storage of any information related to what users do with it.

Nokia unveiled the touchscreen S60 interface last October. The new software would allow licensees to develop devices with a variety of input methods, such as touchscreen with traditional keypad, QWERTY keyboard, or standalone touchscreen, supporting both finger or stylus optimised input.

HTC Touch Diamond
Taiwan-based HTC was the first company in India to launch a touchscreen phone. With Touch, HTC debuted touchscreen phones in India (officially).

Touch Diamond is the company's fourth touchscreen launch in India (for GSM), after HTC Touch, HTC Dual and HTC Cruise.

This iPhone wannabe has the new 3D touch interface called TouchFLO 3D. TouchFLO 3D interface provides animated access to messaging, email, photos, music, weather and other features. Measuring 102 x 51 x 11.33mm, Touch Diamond operates on WCDMA/HSPA (900/2100MHz) networks, capable of boosting mobile Internet speed up to 7.3 Mbps using HSDPA and HSUPA.

Key features include, a 2.8 inch VGA touchscreen display, 3.2 megapixel camera with an optical auto-focus lens, video calling capability and auto sensor screen pivoting.

It runs on Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, comes with 4GB of internal storage with 256MB flash and 192MB RAM. Other features include Bluetooth with EDR, minUSB, integrated GPS and Wi-Fi.

Asus P320
For style freaks, Taiwan-based Asus has launched a touchscreen PDA in the Indian market in shades of pink and pearlescent white. With rounded corners and curved edges, the phone has a circular navigational key.

Based on the Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional platform, the P320 features GPS navigation, EDGE/GPRS, Wi-Fi for Internet access, Blue tooth and USB connectivity. It comes pre-loaded with ASUS Today suite that includes applications such as Time, Mail Box, Calendar, News, Weather and Music Player available to users via a single window.

Some other key features are a 2.6 inch TFT touchscreen with 65K color, 240 x 320 pixels resolution, OMAP 850 (Texas Instrument's Open Multimedia Application Platform) 200 MHz processor, 128MB Flash ROM + 64 MB DDR RAM and business applications. The phone boasts of 2 mega pixel AF camera and microSD support. The phone is priced at approximately Rs 12,900.

Samsung TouchWIZ F480
Another touchscreen contender from Samsung's stable in India is TouchWIZ F480.

The phone, which made its India debut recently, has a 2.8-inch TFT LCD (240x320) touchscreen, integrated FM radio, multi-format video playback (MPEG4, H.263, H.264, WMV, Real), MPEG4 video recording and editing functions.

The phone also comes with face detection technology, image stabiliser, CMOS video lens and Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) features. There are also a few customisable features like Drag `n' Drop and Auto Smile Shot coupled with full touch navigation.

TouchWIZ F480 has a 5 megapixel auto-focus-LED Flash camera, equipped with 240MB of internal memory, which can be expanded up to 8GB. Positioned in the lifestyle segment, the phone come with a host of entertainment features and is compatible with GPRS, EDGE, 3G, HSDPA (7.2mbps) networks and functions on GSM 900/1800/1900, and WCDMA 2100 bands.

Priced at approximately Rs 20,990, Samsung TouchWIZ F480 comes in a metallic body casing.

LG 1000
Here's a touchscreen option for CDMA users, LG 1000 CDMA available on Reliance network. The Nokia Communicator look-alike features a 2.8-inch external touch sensitive LCD and an internal display of the same size along with a full QWERTY keyboard.

LG 10000's key features include a media player (playback for MPEG 4 formats), a 2 megapixel camera with video recorder, expandable memory up to 8GB and Office mail applications for corporate users access (Push mail through Microsoft Server, Pull mail - IMAP and POP3).

It also features a full HTML browser. Other media features include a voice recorder and dual stereo speakers. It also supports Bluetooth and external memory via microSD cards.

The phone has battery life of up to 240 minutes (talktime) and up to 480 hours stand-by time. It is priced between Rs 22,000-25,000.

iPod's makeover in September

Blogosphere is abuzz with news that Apple is set to launch new products on September 9. Apple is said to be revamping iPod Nano and tweaking iPod Touch with new software, as well delivering iTunes 8.0 with a recommendation engine and selective price cuts.

The founder of the popular social-bookmarking site Digg Kevin Rose, wrote on his blog recently that there would be a revamp of the entire iPod line, including both "small cosmetic changes" for the iPod Touch and a "significant redesign" for the iPod Nano.

His blog also shows a photo of a rounded Nano. In a video posting, he says that the kind of smaller, fatter, chunkier Nano is going away for something a lot skinnier and longer.

He also said that it would have "a kind of widescreen across the Nano" and that it is going to be "rounded, kind of oval, so the actual glass on the outside will be curved."

The blogs also hint at price cuts for iPods. According to Rose, "They're (Apple) really trying to get away from the iPhone at $199." Adding that consumers will see a lot of price cuts in iPods so that the "iPhone sales are not cannibalising the iPod sales."

Several other tech sites too reported that Chinese manufacturers are building case orders that match the specs described by Rose.

Chinese accessory maker Beelan is reported to have said that such a case is ready. The sites also report that the new Nano will have a GPS functionality.
