Karnataka Election Results 2008

  • BJP Draws First Blood - Angara Wins Sullia.
  • Krishna Palemar Marches to Victory in Mangalore North.
  • JD(S) Still in the Race - H D Kumaraswamy Wins.

JD(S) which is not making much impact state and district-wise, has something to cheer about as Kumaraswamy registered a win from his contituency. So far the battle in DK and Udupi districts has been between Congress and BJP, and all signals point that it might remain so. State-wise though BJP seems to be inching towards its first victory, though nothing definite can be said as of now.

K Angara has won the Sullia seat over Congress candidate Dr Raghu with a margin of about 5,000 votes while Krishna Palemar has won the Mangalore North seat. This has definitely brought in a lot of cheer in the BJP camp. Congress is yet to register a win.

Back home, the Congress is leading in Mangalore contsituency (erstwhile Ullal) with Khader still maintaining a good lead. In Mangalore South, it is BJP's Yogish Bhat who is surging ahead of Ivan D'Souza who seems to be catching up pretty nicely while BJP seems to be pulling it out in Mangalore North too with Krishna Palemar leading the pack.

It is only in Mulki-Moodbidri that the battle is three-sided with JD(S) making some impact. Though initially only 10 votes separated BJP and JD(S) here now the JD(S) is trailing while Congress and BJP have raced ahead. Amarnath Shetty should be patting himself for atleast being in the race among the JD(S) candidates. However, it is only the early stages of counting.

Puttur constuituency was in the eye of storm in the BJP camp with problems galore between the party and Shaku Akka who was miffed for not getting a ticket. She is contesting independently, but her charm has not worked to the full extent so far as she is still lagging behind while Congress and BJP are battling it out. Mallika Prasad has managed to inch her way ahead of Bondala Jagannath Shetty, who was leading by a small margin till now. But figures can change in an instant.

Meanwhile, Congress and BJP are still going strong in Bantwal with figures for Nagaraj Shetty and Ramanath Rai dipping and rising constantly.

With such a close battle at hand, it is evident that the tension in the party camps is at an all-time high. The parties had brushed aside the exit polls each stating confidently that it would sweep the polls with majority. Though BJP leads the pack at the state level, in the district it is still a hot race. Read more

ISC students post impressive result

Students who appeared for the Council for Indian School Certificate exams have reason to rejoice. An impressive 98.04% of students cleared the class X paper, while 97.04% passed the class XII exam. For the board, which is celebrating its golden jubilee this year, it’s a pat on the back, signalling a marginal improvement from last year. For the north region though, there’s not much to celebrate.

Students from the north didn’t fair well compared to their counterparts from the rest of the country. In fact, Delhi and NCR failed to throw up a national level topper. That honour went to two girls from Mumbai and Varanasi — Janaki Kirit Sheth and Shruti Singh — for class X while in class XII, Gaurav Sood from Doon school in Dehradun walked away with the top score. With a pass percentage of 97.55% in class X and 96.76% in class XII, the north trailed behind all the regions.

Sadly, the city didn’t even manage the 100% result it got last year, with only 124 out of the 132 students passing in class XII. In class X, of the 581 students who appeared, only 567 cleared the exam. However, the city did do well individually.

In Shri Ram School, which recorded a pass percentage of 86.2% — its highest till date — the class XII topper was Reva Dutta, who scored 96.5%. Said Komal Sood, principal, Shri Ram, "The students have done very well. We have a number of 90 percenters in both class X and XII."

The class X topper, Naresh Raghuraman , was equally excited. With a personal best of 96%, the boy had got cent per cent in computers, which he claimed was his future. "I want to crack the IIT-JEE and go on to study at MIT. I’ve already started preparing for it."

The council also showed an upwards trend in the pass percentage of students in the special category. While both the ISC and ICSE saw SC, ST and OBC students doing better than last year, it also had interesting statistics for the girl students. Said G Arathoon, secretary, CISCE, " The girls traditionally do better in exams."

This year too, out of the 1,01,998 students who sat for the ICSE papers, an impressive 98.63% girls cleared the exam. Compare that to the boys, who had a pass percentage of 97.57% only. The story was repeated in class XII, where the girls again outshone the boys.

Interestingly, region-wise, the south showed the maximum percentage entry of girls at 47% at both the ISC and ICSE levels. It also had the highest pass percentage, with 99.22 students passing in class X and 99% in class XII. This was followed by the west and the east.

Madhyamik results delaying some days

With Higher Secondary, ICSE and ISC results already being declared and CBSE results scheduled to be declared three days later, Madhyamik examinees are tense and apprehensive over the reason that is delaying the publication of results.
According to an official of West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, the Board is still “not in a position” to announce any probable date when the results will be declared. This has left Madhyamik examinees as well as their parents worried. “Why is the Board taking so much time to declare results? There must be something wrong with either the assessment system or the performance of students,” said Mrs Susmita Pradhan, parent of a Madhyamik candidate of Arya Vidyalaya.
With schools being closed due to summer vacation, students are not able to approach the schools' authorities for any information related to Madhyamik examinations. “I keep in regular touch with my friends and also some teachers who live in our locality. But nobody is in a position to give any information. We were first told that results will be declared in the first week of May, then we heard that it will be after the panchayat elections. Now with HS results being declared we are unnerved,” said Bijoy Das, a Madhyamik examinee of Belur Boys School. Source

DU girl tops among women in UPSC exam 2008

Adapa Karthik, presently an Indian Police Service probationer undergoing training at the Indian Police Academy, Hyderabad, has topped the Civil Services Examination, 2007, while Delhi School of Economics (DSE) post-graduate Ashima Jain secured the highest rank among women out of the 734 who made it.

A qualified doctor, Karthik, appeared for the examination in 2004 and secured a rank of 166. He felt he could do better and took the same exam again in 2006, coming 144th. Still not satisfied, he took the exams again last year, and emerged right on top.

Seventh rank holder Ashima is a well-recognised name in the DSE campus. DSE Economics head S.C. Panda has no trouble recollecting Jain’s achievements as a student even though she passed out in 2005.

“She was one of our brightest students and the topper in her batch. I would have expected her to top the examinations,” Panda told the Hindustan Times.

Seven women are among the top 20 in the list of successful candidates, who include 286 from the general category. Doing Delhi proud is another woman, Smita Sarangi, who ranked 17th.

Two JNU students, Mahesh Kumar and Aditya Goenka also came out with flying colours. Mohammad Pervez Alam (21) a student of Jamia Milia Islamia, cleared the exam on his first attempt. “I am not surprised he excelled in the civil services,” said Mohammad Asif Umar, coordinator of the Center for Coaching and Career Planning Guidance, Jamia.

OBCs account for 266 candidates while 128 belong to Scheduled Castes and 54 to Scheduled Tribes.

A total of 3,27,683 candidates had applied for this examination. Of the successful candidates, selected for appointment to the IAS, IFS, IPS and other central services, 580 are men and 154 women. source

Energy nagging really does work wonders on men

Women who think that they are wasting their time and energy nagging their husbands should reassess their opinion, for a new study has found that nagging does work on men.

The study by US researchers found that the mental fatigue generated by a continuous stream of questions or orders leaves men susceptible to persuasion.

In other words, the researchers say, it leaves most males too tired to oppose.

In one experiment, the researchers tried to convince a group of students to sanction one month's summer holiday rather than three.

Half the students came to the study fresh, while the other half given a mentally-draining task ahead of time were more willing to sacrifice two months of holiday, the researchers found.

The team says that other tips to win over your man include not wavering when making your pitch ums and ahs sound less convincing not giving too many choices and meeting face to face.

Moreover, flattery and mirroring the body language of the person being persuaded also helps in convincing the person.

"Avoid engaging in argument or doing battle with sales people when your mental batteries are low. Or, if you are trying to be persuasive, strike when your target is low on mental energy,” New Scientist quoted the researchers, as saying.

40% Men are increasingly going off sex !

Men are increasingly going off sex due to stress, depression and the inability to talk about their problems, experts have claimed.

A team at relationship counselling service Relate has reported a 40 per cent increase in the number of lazy blokes, admitting that, despite being physically able to have sex, they are not interested.

"Men used to come to us with impotence but Viagra has sorted some of that problem. What we have is a lot of men who say, as women did in the fifties: I can have sex, but I don't want to. It's not rewarding.

"Such complaints were unheard of ten years ago. They tend to be men in their thirties, forties and fifties and married. It is a serious issue.

"It counts as a psychosexual dysfunction, rather than just a relationship problem, because these men haven't simply gone off their partner but off sex altogether," the Daily Mail quoted Peter Bell of Relate as saying.

According to Prof Michael King of the Royal Free and University College Medical School in London, depression might be the problem.

"Men are most likely to suffer depression between the ages of 30 and 50. One of the explanations is that men are less able to talk about their problems than women, or express their emotions," he said.

Added Prof Cary Cooper of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy: "Britain's work culture has gone from nine to five to extremely long hours, which makes for a very stressful life." Source : IBNlive

Single men are sexiest for fertile wives stage

Women’s sexual preferences change over the course of their menstrual cycle, with partnered women being most attracted to single men during their fertile stage, according to a new study.

Researchers at the University of Padua in Italy suggest that partnered women, who want to have an affair or even think about having a fling, subconsciously choose single men when they are fertile. On the other hand, their attraction shifts to coupled men when they become infertile.

The researchers say that women select a man who is more likely to be a willing partner when they are fertile.

They explain that having an affair with a coupled man may be both a waste of time, and risky, as there is a greater chance of getting caught.

“Ancestral women who felt more attracted to a single man than to an already coupled one would have been more likely than others to succeed and transmit this preference to their daughters,” Nature quoted Paola Bressan of the University of Padua in Italy, as saying.

“These subconscious preferences are apparently still with us,” she added. The reason for women choosing coupled men during their non-fertile stage, according to Bressan, is that the women unconsciously consider these men as potential replacement partners.

“A coupled man obviously has the skills to maintain a long-term relationship, whereas a single man is an unknown. Indeed, women tend to be suspicious of men who are still on the mating market,” Bressan said.

For the study, team asked more than 200 women, half of whom were single, the other half in relationships, to rate the attractiveness of men in photographs described as single, married, in love, or with a girlfriend.

When the same man was labelled as single rather than being in any kind of attachment, fertile women in relationships scored single men 13 per cent higher than attached men; infertile women scored them 8 percent lower.

Bressan said that the effect of fertile women’s liking for single men was most noticeable when those men had particularly ‘manly’ features, such as strong jaws. The results also revealed that single women showed no variation in their preferences, they usually showed no regard for whether a man was single or taken when expressing sexual preference, at any point in their cycle.

Bressan said that the findings boost other studies looking at physiological changes and sexual behaviour associated with reproductive hormone cycles in women.

“These findings provide additional evidence that oestrus in women, long believed to have been lost in human evolution, is alive and well,” said a psychologist at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, Eli Finkel. Source : Ibnlive

Indians unhappy sexual satisfaction says Durex survey

A new global survey on sexual well-being conducted by the condom manufacturer Durex shows that Indians are low on sexual satisfaction.

Achieving an orgasm is a key driver of sexual satisfaction. Just 46 per cent of Indians said that they usually orgasm.

Moreover, the level of sexual satisfaction was half for women as compared to that of men in India. While 55 per cent Indian males achieve orgasm, only 26 per cent Indian women can say the same.

This difference in gender pretty much holds true globally, where twice as many men (64 per cent) as women regularly have orgasms.

The survey says Italians, Spaniards and Mexicans have the best sex lives, with 66 per cent of them reaching the peak, while the people of Hong Kong and China (24 per cent achieve orgasm) and the Japanese (27 per cent achieve orgasm) have the worst sex lives.

Are people sexually satisfied?

Sex worldwide could be better. Apparently, we have lost our sense of adventure, our libidos and our interest.

60 per cent of us say that sex is fun, enjoyable, and a vital part of life. However, only 44 per cent of people are fully satisfied with their sex lives.

The survey establishes that we become less satisfied with our sex lives as we get older, more so for men than women. This is partly because we tend to have sex less often and we have been in relationships for longer.

We tend to find things less exciting and more monotonous. Interestingly, having children doesn't negatively impact upon satisfaction.

Emotional Drivers

Sexual priorities are changing. People are looking for the softer, more sophisticated side of sex — quality time with partners, romance and a sense of security within the bedroom.

Feeling close to your partner, feeling loved, respected and secure all impact strongly on our ability to achieve sexual satisfaction. Mutual respect plays a vital role in a satisfying sex life.

Eighty-two per cent of people surveyed (who are sexually satisfied) say they feel respected by our partner during sex, while 39 per cent are looking for more love and romance.

Thirty-six per cent would like more quality time alone with their partner, 31 per cent would like more fun and better communication and intimacy with their partner and 29 per cent, a higher sex drive. Thirty-seven per cent want to feel less stressed out and tired.

Having an exciting sex life is also important, although this decreases during a relationship. Those who have been in a relationship over three years tend to be less inhibited.

It's important to try to keep your sex life as exciting as possible. Fifty-three per cent of us see the benefits of introducing a little experimentation into our sex lives

What is sexual well-being?

Sexual well-being is a balance of physical, emotional and sociological factors. It's about protecting and nurturing the sexual health of both you and your partner, getting the most from your sex life and feeling confident and happy about yourself.

Sexual well-being is a fundamental part of human well-being and health.
